Kelly and Max’s journey into the pizza world started long before their business did. It all began in 2015 when they met in Santa Cruz, California, and quickly bonded over their shared ambitions. Their time working together at local farmers markets in the Bay Area planted the seed for their future in food, as they watched the long lines forming at the wood-fired pizza stands.
Despite their early conversations about starting a business, it wasn’t until the uncertainty of March 2020 that things got real. Max lost his job, and within days, they made a bold decision – they purchased a wood-fired pizza oven trailer and jumped headfirst into building their dream. In just two months, they secured permits, finalized their branding, and hit the ground running. Their first sale marked the beginning of Get Rad Pizza’s rise in the South Lake Tahoe area.
Kelly’s background in pizza, combined with her experience in the vibrant farmers market scene, gave the duo the perfect starting point. With pizza being a hot commodity at every market they attended, it was clear that this was the way to go. Max, who had childhood dreams of becoming a pizza maker, and Kelly, who longed to own a wood-fired pizza business, saw their dreams come to life through Get Rad Pizza.
Fast forward three years, and Get Rad Pizza has become a staple in the South Lake Tahoe area. Their Bread Stone Oven trailer can be found weekly at The Hangar, a taphouse in South Lake Tahoe, serving up delicious pies to hungry customers. They also have the flexibility for pop-up catering events across the region.
When asked what their favorite part of owning a business is, the answer was simple: getting to work with the people they love. For Kelly and Max, running Get Rad Pizza is about more than just making pizza – it’s about creating something special together. Whether it’s skiing, biking, or spending time with family, they draw inspiration from the things they love and infuse that energy into every pizza they make.
One of their favorite creations? The Firebreak – a pie that perfectly blends mozzarella, ricotta, Calabrian chile oil, sausage, and arugula into a mouthwatering masterpiece.
